Findyourtribe.com

1. Think about the name of this website. What assumptions does it suggest about human beings/ society/ identity? What connotations does it create?

The name of this website suggests that human beings belong to a 'tribe' of people that all value the same set of things. 'Find your...' suggests that everyone has a tribe that they belong to that just needs to be found. It also suggests that not only do they belong to the tribe but the tribe also belongs to them. It shows that society is disintergrating into more and more tribes - so much so that it can be hard to find which one you belong to, something this website can help with.

2. Think about the way that this company is carrying out market research here. Why are they using this vehicle? Why not just use questionnaires?

Young people are at the heart of identity tribes. The reason behind this being that they are only just finding out who they are and what their identity holds, so they experiement with the different values that different tribes have. Young people also tend to be the main consumers of things such as music, social network and blogging sites etc. The website therefore has to be created to appeal to the younger audience, the site does this by making it visually appealing and easy to complete, with pictures to help with decisions. Using the internet also helps capture a bigger response rate, something that is questionnaires struggle with. It's also easier to submit than a questionnaire with results instantly shown.

3. Think about the proliferation/ amount of tribes/ subcultures described by FindYourTribe. What does this suggest about marketing, capitilism, the media industry, and indentity?

As the media industry grows so does the amount of different music, websites, radio stations and television programmes. These all help to shape individuals, with all these growing so does the amount of identity tribes. Some even have the same values and beliefs as other tribes, mixing to make another one. Tribes are also forever changing and shifting, creating new ones as it does this. The more tribes bringing created shows that identity is slowly becoming very individualised.
