In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My music video is aimed at the genre of indie/rock. This is mainly due to the style of music that the band is associated with. In order to specifically target my correct audience i decided to research into other indie/rock bands and how they portray their genre within their music videos. Indie/rock is considered a very powerful genre, a sense of “rock ‘n’ roll” will always flow within it and many indie/rock bands holds this attitude. However, because i was portraying a strong female message within my music video i felt it was important that i looked into female dominated bands and how they got their strong message of femininity across to their audience. Some of the bands i researched into included Florence and the Machine, PJ Harvey, Ladyhawke and the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s.
After a deep analysis into distribution associated with these artists i found that in one way or another, femininity is something that is highly significant within the band. Florence and the Machine portray a very elegant and delicate side to females. I wanted Dalia to portray some elements of this in her fantasy land aspects as a free spirit. I looked closely at music videos of Florence and the way in which she moves and characterises herself within her videos. I used elements of this in Dalia’s movement, for example when Dalia spins around and gracefully moves, this is shown in Florence’s video “Dog Days Are Over”. “Dog Days Are Over” holds a lot of influence behind the making of our music video, the use of theme, props and costume all gave us influential ideas for the fantasy aspect of our video. The theme of Alice in Wonderland is shown within her video, along with the use of outrageous costume (note the use of glitter in the video and the use of glitter upon my album cover) and unusual props.
Not also in the video, the way in which Florence is playing a variety of characters much like Dalia in our music video. Florence runs away looking scared and confused, we portrayed this side of her character within Dalia as she tries to escape her domestic boyfriend, Fraser.
Other influences include PJ Harvey, an artist that has a history associated with her rock attitude and powerful female messages. Her video "Good Fortune" shows her letting herself free, she moves along the street spinning and showing a crazy attitude to the public. Her movement and character is much like Dalia's as she enters the fantasy land and lets her spirit free. The use of night time, car's and street lights in the video is also something we took into consideration when filming in the dark and especially inside the car as this was an usual place to shoot a scene.
My target audience is associated with the age range of 16-30. A specific gender is not noted however, due to the strong message of femininity and the abuse that females often have to experience at home, my music video may appeal more to the female gender. Males will often support the message portrayed however and the masculinity that surrounds the indie/rock genre will draw the male gender in. Other lifestyle factors that may be associated with this demographic is that of the rock 'n' roll. Casual fashion styles of skinny jeans and band t-shirts are also associated with them.
Within my music video there is a strong representation of youth and domestic violence. It shows the narrative of a young girl as she gets abused by her domestic boyfriend. It represents young girls and the vulnerability that they hold in domestic relationships, it shows how they might deal with these situations and gives a slight insight into the mind of a broken girl.
